Yala National Park
A Wildlife Paradise of Leopards and Ancient Heritage
Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most famous and biodiverse wildlife reserve, stretching across the southeastern region of the island. The park features a unique blend of ecosystems, including dense jungles, wetlands, and coastal habitats, creating an ideal environment for a wide variety of wildlife.
Yala is particularly renowned for its high population of leopards, making it one of the best places in the world to spot these elusive big cats. Visitors on a safari may also encounter elephants, water buffalo, sambar deer, peacocks, crocodiles, and many other species in their natural surroundings.
In addition to its rich wildlife, Yala is also home to important archaeological and historical sites. Scattered within and around the park are remnants of ancient civilizations, including irrigation tanks dating back to the 5th century and stupas from as early as the 2nd century, reflecting the area’s deep cultural heritage.
