Sigiriya
The Majestic Lion Rock of Sri Lanka
Sigiriya Rock Fortress, often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic landmarks. Rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding jungle in the central plains, this massive rock stands as a remarkable blend of history, engineering, and natural beauty.
Originally used as a shelter by Buddhist monks in the 3rd century, Sigiriya was later transformed into a magnificent royal fortress in the 5th century by King Kashyapa, who built it as a secure palace atop the rock. The entrance once featured a grand lion structure, of which only the massive paws remain today, giving the site its name “Lion Rock.”
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya is part of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle and is famous for its ancient frescoes, landscaped gardens, and intricate stairways. At the summit, visitors can explore the ruins of the royal palace while enjoying breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding forests and hills.
