Dambulla is a historic town surrounded by hills, lakes, and fertile valleys, blending natural beauty with deep spiritual significance. Dominated by its iconic golden Buddha statue, the town is best known for the remarkable Dambulla Cave Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most well-preserved cave temple complexes in the country.

The temple dates back to the 1st century BC, with evidence that Buddhist monks inhabited these caves as far back as the 3rd century BC. This rocky hill also served as a refuge for King Valagamba during his 14-year exile from the ancient kingdom of Anuradhapura. Inside the caves, visitors can find centuries-old murals, statues, and religious artifacts that reflect Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and religious heritage.

Archaeological findings suggest that the area has been inhabited for over 2,700 years, adding to its historical importance. Dambulla is also located near the famous Sigiriya Rock Fortress, making it a key stop for travelers exploring the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka.
