Wilpattu National Park

A Journey into the Heart of Nature at Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park is the largest and one of the oldest national parks in Sri Lanka, covering an impressive area of about 1,317 square kilometers. The park gets its name from its unique “villus” — natural, sand-rimmed lakes that are scattered throughout the landscape.

Located in the North Central Province, it lies close to the historic city of Anuradhapura, just about 30 km to the west. The main entrance to the park is at Hunuwilgama, which serves as the gateway for visitors.

Wilpattu is renowned for its rich wildlife, making it one of the best places in Sri Lanka to spot elusive leopards, along with elephants and sloth bears. The park’s terrain is a mix of open saltgrass meadows and dense monsoon forests, set against striking red soil that adds to its unique beauty.

To fully explore this vast wilderness, a safari jeep ride is the most popular and effective way to experience the park.
