Discover the Biodiversity of Sinharaja Rainforest

The extraordinary diversity of wildlife and plant species in the Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve led to its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Spanning 8,864 hectares, there are plans to significantly expand the reserve to further protect its ecological value. This untouched, hilly rainforest is home to a vast range of endemic species, including mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians, and countless varieties of trees and insects.

Sinharaja is especially famous for birdwatching, where a unique sight can be observed—mixed feeding flocks of birds led by species like the Great Racket-tailed Drongo and the Orange-billed Babbler. Remarkably, 20 out of Sri Lanka’s 26 endemic bird species can be found here. The forest also boasts a high level of plant endemism, with over 60% of its flora being unique to the region, many of them rare. Additionally, more than half of the country’s endemic mammals, butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and insects inhabit this reserve.

Due to its dense vegetation, spotting animals can be challenging, but this adds to the excitement for wildlife enthusiasts who venture deep into the forest in search of rare species. The rainforest thrives in temperatures between 19°C and 34°C, with towering trees reaching heights of 35 to 45 meters, creating a lush and vibrant ecosystem.
